The Muffin Top Hat is a hybrid between a beanie and a beret, knitted from the rib band and up to the top; firstly the height with the sides of the hat, then increase to create the Muffin top! This pattern is written in 3 sizes, and can be knitted in 8ply/DK or 10ply/Aran weight. The knitting kit includes 100g of yarn and the price of the kit varies according to the yarn you select. ($25 to $40) The 8ply/ DK yarn knits as Small, Med & Large sizes. The thicker 10ply/Aran weight the small size knits as a medium size and Medium as a Large size and Large will create an extra-large hat. The muffin top has less depth than the Wicked Hat brim to top and is fuller in the 'muffin' top.
The hat is knitted quite firmly 10ply/Aran on 4.5mm needles rib on 3.75mm; 8ply on 4mm needles and the rib on 3.25mm needles.
The pattern allows you to knit either in the round or flat on straight needles, which then requires a seam. The hat is finished with a plait, which hides the seam if you knit the flat version. The plait can be worn to either the front or side of the hat, as the sides are quite tall and when cold, this hat pulls down beautifully over your ears!
